In order to work safely around Hydrogen Sulfide, you must first know what it is. H2S is a colorless gas with an odor that is often said to smell like rotten eggs. It is commonly encountered in the oil and petrochemical industry. This gas is highly dangerous. It is highly flammable, but the biggest danger comes from its toxicity. In some concentrations, it can knock you out in one breath.

petroleum courses in islamabad  also explains ACGIH, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, has determined that it a maximum safe exposure to hydrogen sulfide is 10 PPM over a 40 hour work week. This is also called the Threshhold Limit Value, Time-Weighted Average.

Exposure can cause many health problems depending on how long you are exposed and the concentration level of the gas. In concentrations of 100-400 parts per million, it can make you nauseated and disoriented. Long term exposure at these levels can cause chemical pneumonia. In concentrations over 500 PPM, it can make you pass out and go into respiratory arrest even from a short exposure.

In over 700 PPM, one breath can place you into respiratory arrest and if you aren’t revived in a few short minutes, you will die.

So you can see that it is pretty important to protect yourself. You can do so with proper gas detection equipment, monitoring, engineering controls, PPE, having a rescue and contingency plan and following all safe work practices.
